Sony is rolling out a new update to the 3D Creator application for the Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZ1, and Xperia XZ1 Compact, introducing a handful of new features, of which some have been previously demonstrated at MWC 2018. The main addition comes in the form of an ability to capture fast 3D selfies which can then be further improved with 4K textures through post-scan cloud processing, though this option is not available for existing scans and can only be utilized with new ones. Additionally, users can now choose a 'full-color plastic' material option when ordering a 3D print, and following the latest update, consumers in select markets will also have the option of ordering 3D models engraved in a crystal sheet. Last but not least, the update promises generally improved scanning performance.
The 3D Creator app still requires Android 8.0 Oreo to run, meaning owners of the Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZ1, or Xperia XZ1 Compact should make sure that they have made the jump from Nougat before trying to install it. And although 3D Creator relies heavily on the smartphone's camera, the service comes in the form of a separate Play Store app and it's not part of the default camera application itself. Aside from the latest additions mentioned above, the 3D Creator app can also be used to create 3D live wallpapers for smartphones, share 3D models on social media, or create GIFs and videos in conjunction with the Shadow Avatars service developed by Uraniom as an extension for the app itself.
The process of capturing 3D selfies is fairly simple and resembles panoramic or 360-degree photography in that the app's viewfinder shows users the direction in which to move their handsets in 3D space in order to recreate subjects in polygonal form. The official video below demonstrates this process along with some of the new features added with the latest update, but do note that while the video's title mentions 3D Creator version 2.0, the app's version in the Play Store is currently shown as 1.0.A.2.18 instead.
