Update [April 20]: A OnePlus India representative referred to the claims of a May 18 OnePlus 6 launch as "false," having said that "there has been no formal communication" on the matter. The original story is as follows.
A new report coming out of India suggests that the much-hyped OnePlus 6 will be coming to the country on May 18. Being an important market for the company, OnePlus usually brings its newest smartphones soon after their global debut. The case could be the same this time too with the global announcement happening a few days before that mentioned date. The report also suggests the expected price of the Android flagship to be Rs. 39,999 ($605) without providing the RAM and storage variant it is for. In comparison, the 64GB variant of the OnePlus 5T currently retails for Rs. 32,999 ($499) in India. The Chinese smartphone maker is expected to announce its next flagship at an inflated price but a jump of over $100 for its base variant will further push the handset closer to the premium category.
OnePlus has been aggressively teasing its upcoming flagship smartphone across its social media channels before its imminent launch. A recent tweet by the company confirmed that the OnePlus 6 will be its first device to have water resistance. Another photo posted on Twitter had the 5T on top of the 6 showing their sides with the Alert Slider replaced with the SIM card tray. Reports have suggested that the Alert Slider on the next OnePlus flagship will be moved to its right side, placed above the power key. OnePlus executives have already confirmed a cut out for the phone’s display, following the recent market trend of having one. The device was also leaked in a photo revealing its back in a wood-like finish, with the two cameras now placed in the center and aligned vertically.
The Android smartphone will come powered by Qualcomm’s top-end Snapdragon 845 processor and will have up to 8GB of RAM and 256 of internal storage according to leaks and rumors. A new display measuring 6.28 inches is expected in a new 19:9 aspect ratio offering an FHD+ resolution of 2,280 x 1080 pixels. Reports have claimed it to include a battery with a 3,450mAh capacity and a dual-camera setup with sensors of 20-megapixel and 16-megapixel resolution. OnePlus holds a majority market share in the Indian premium smartphone segment, i.e. above the Rs. 30,000 ($453) mark, making it natural for the company to introduce its device in the country on priority. In fact, OnePlus has already started advertising its next flagship in some Indian movie theaters, which also confirmed it to be an Amazon.in exclusive smartphone.
