The Warhammer franchise is getting an augmented reality game and it'll be available for both Android and iOS mobile devices. The game will be called of Warhammer: Age of Sigmar Champions, and will be a cross-platform trading card game that can also be played on PC and there will be a physical version of the game that can be played with real cards for a more traditional tabletop experience. The game will be a joint creation between Games Workshop and PlayFusion, who will also be supplying the Enhanced Reality Engine that will power the augmented reality portion of the game.
It isn't clear if the AR feature will be a standalone experience separate from the mobile game or if it will be integrated, so it could be its own app or it could be a feature in the mobile game version of Warhammer Age of Sigmar Champions that players can tap into. What is clear is that players of the physical game can use PlayFusion's Enhanced Reality Engine to "make their cards come alive" during play, so the AR experience will at least in some way tie into the physical card game to enhance the gameplay experience. How the cards will come alive is not mentioned but it's possible that the AR feature will be able to scan something on the card that makes the characters on the cards appear as virtual representations on the phone display, not too unlike other apps built with augmented reality technology.
The AR experience will reportedly launch in July of this year so this is possibly when the physical and digital versions of the game will launch as well. Although there hasn't been any mention of whether or not the game will be free-to-play or if it'll come at a premium price tag, with the game due to launch this Summer it's likely the pricing information will show up sometime well before then. Worth considering is that other games in the Warhammer franchise have been both premium and free-to-play so it could end up in either direction.
