GameStop is reportedly going to end sales of Cricket Wireless prepaid services, based on statements from representatives that are said to have mentioned the stores actually stopped selling the phones and services at the end of January. According to the report reps that had mentioned sales had ended came from GameStop locations in multiple states, which might point to GameStop itself having troubles with sales of Cricket’s products.
It’s not clear whether the decision to end sales in GameStop stores came from GameStop or from AT&T, Cricket’s parent company, but a lack of sales does seem to have been an issue for GameStop locations, as it’s noted that customers who had purchased Cricket Wireless phones and services through the national video game retailer were keeping those phones longer and not upgrading very often, which would translate to less sales for GameStop. Neither AT&T nor GameStop have made comments regarding the change to the product and service offerings, but it’s possible either company could still offer up a statement as to the reasons that Cricket’s phones and services will no longer be available through the video game retailer. Of course both companies could also choose to move forward with this change while mentioning nothing and simply letting the notion that Cricket prepaid was once offered in GameStop stores fade into existence.
The ending of Cricket Wireless services could also have to do with GameStop shutting down a number of its own locations across the U.S., which is said to be around 150 locations nationwide. Less stores means less employees, and less employees would likely mean less sales in general, and if customers who initially purchased Cricket Wireless services through GameStop weren’t upgrading very often, leading to less sales for the company from this particular area, then it would make sense if GameStop wanted to focus more of its employees efforts on selling other products and services where it was more likely to bring in a profit. Despite this change for Cricket, which is also essentially a change for AT&T, AT&T still reported a fair number of new prepaid customers which suggests that prepaid adds for the U.S.’ number two carrier weren’t all that bad.
