A small OEM called Wireless Mobi Solution took to CES 2018 to unveil its new Moviphone, an Android-powered mid-range handset that can also serve as a projector. According to the company, the Moviphone “looks like a OnePlus 5 with a built-in projector,” allowing users to share content on the go, anywhere, anytime, by projecting it onto a bigger surface. Smartphones nowadays are often used or media consumption, whether it’s YouTube videos, Netflix movies and TV shows, photos, or some other type of content. Although smartphones have become increasingly larger, however, their displays are still quite small for movies and videos. Other manufacturers have tried before to incorporate a projector into a smartphone but the devices didn’t have much success, yet WMS is taking a shot at this niche with the Moviphone.
In terms of specifications, the Moviphone is a sold mid-ranger with good specifications for its category. It features a 5.5-inch IPS TFT display with a Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,080 pixels), an octa-core MediaTek MT6750V processor with a Mali-T860 MP2 GPU, and comes in two configurations: 32GB of native storage and 3GB of RAM, or 64GB of storage with 4GB of RAM. A 128GB storage version is also available, and it seems that it’s the only one on sale for now. Other specs include a 13-megapixel rear camera with phase detection autofocus and LED flash, an 8-megapixel front camera with soft-light flash, microSD support for expandable storage, and a 4,000 mAh battery that should last for up to 22.1 hours of talk time and up to four hours with the projector on. On the software side, it runs Android Nougat out of the box.
The 128GB version of the Moviphone is now available for purchase at $599 for those consumers that might be interested in having a device with these capabilities. The main highlight of this smartphone, however, is its built-in projector. It’s a 50-lumen laser projector that can beam content up to 100 inches in 720p resolution, with a contrast ratio of 80,000:1. It might not be much compared to a serious projector, but for one that fits into a pocket it’s more than decent. The Moviphone will start shipping in six weeks and it’s currently on display at booth #52827 at CES 2018, which lasts until January 12.
