Best Action Cameras - January 2018

In the Action Camera space, the big name is really GoPro. But GoPro isn't always the best for action cameras. Their products are really good, and continue to get better, including the new GoPro Fusion, but there are plenty of other options available right now, for action cameras. Including YI, AUKEY, DBPOWER and many others. These all provide great products at cheaper prices than GoPro. Like the YI 4K+ Sports and Action Camera for example. It sports 4K at 60fps quality video, and it is almost half the price of the GoPro HERO5 Session which can also do 4k/60fps. YI also has a few other options which are in the list below, including the YI Lite which is under $100.

Other manufacturers (read: smaller manufacturers) have been able to lower the price and still include a slew of great accessories to go along with the action camera. From different mounts, to extra batteries and even modified selfie sticks (or as some might say, monopods). These make using these action cameras even better, as you are able to take them out to the pool, the beach or really anywhere and put them on anything or anyone without needing to buy other mounts and such to get started. Makes the entry price a lot better. For instance, if you wanted to mount a GoPro on a dog and see what a dog's day is like, you might need to buy a headstrap, but with something like the DBPOWER model listed below, it is included in the price.

Action cameras are quickly becoming really good alternatives to using your smartphone for getting pictures and video in different situations. Especially since a lot of smartphones still aren't waterproof, you'll see GoPro's at a lot of beaches and pools around the world. And these are some of the best action cameras that are currently available. If you search Amazon, you'll find a ton of others, but some of those are rather sketchy, while the ones here are not, and will actually provide you with a good experience using its action camera. Which is why you want to buy one anyways.

YI 4K+ Sports and Action Camera

This action camera from YI is a great one to check out. It has the ability to record at up 4K and 60fps, which is going to provide some really smooth video for you. Additionally, this is one of the cheaper 4K Action Cameras on the market right now, making it one of the better choices on this list.

DBPOWER EX5000 Action Camera

If you don't absolutely need 4K, this model from DBPOWER is worth checking out. It sports 1080p resolution and is under $50. DBPOWER does also include a ton of accessories with the EX5000, so you are able to take it into the ocean or pools, or mount it on something as well.

GoPro HERO5 Black

This isn't the latest in the HERO series from GoPro, but it is one of the better action cameras out there, and it's under $300. It does 4K video and is able to do 12-megapixel photos. It is also waterproof, without an additional case, up to 33-feet. Which is pretty good for taking it surfing and such.

GoPro Fusion

This is the best of the best from GoPro. It's a spherical or 360-degree camera, that is also an action camera. Meaning that it can go into the water, and take a beating if need be. But you'll be able to record in 360-degrees, which is great for those that want to make others feel like they are actually there.

YI Lite Action Camera

YI has another option here on this list, and that's the YI Lite Action Camera. This one is smaller and also a bit cheaper. It does do 4K recording but only at 20fps. It can do 1080p at 60fps though. So you'll get great footage at 1080p resolution, which is still pretty good since most people will see it in 1080p anyways.

TENKER K1 4K Action Camera

This is another rather inexpensive 4K Action Camera, coming in at around $70 right now. This does 4K at 20fps, and does also come with a slew of accessories. This includes 2 extra batteries, which is going to come in handy when taking this out for a run. It also has a selfie stick which can also come in handy in some situations.

GoPro HERO5 Session

GoPro also has the HERO5 Session here, which is a smaller action camera, and works great for putting in your pocket or in smaller areas. The main difference here besides the size, is the fact that there isn't a screen to show you the viewfinder of the camera. So you're mostly shooting blind with the HERO5 Session, but it also does better 4K footage than the regular HERO5.
