Sonos had discounted a number of its products during the holiday season, which is something that the company doesn't do typically. It's typically tough to find any Sonos speakers below its regular price tag. But the PLAY:1 had dropped to $149 and the PLAY:3 was $249, with smaller discounts on the PLAY:5, PLAYBAR and PLAYBASE. Now, the company has decided to make those $50 price drops on the PLAY:1 and PLAY:3 permanent.
Both the PLAY:1 and PLAY:3 aren't new speakers, and have been out for quite a few years now, so it's no surprise to see the MSRP now drop to $149 and $249 respectively. But that also makes these two speakers an even better value compared to what else is on the market right now. The PLAY:1 is a smaller speaker, but that doesn't mean it's not a good speaker. It outputs some incredible sound and also streams over WiFi, instead of Bluetooth. Which is Sonos' big feature, actually. Streaming over WiFi nets you better quality audio, as well saving battery on whatever device is controlling the music. The PLAY:3 is a mid-sized speaker (the PLAY:5 is the largest one) and it is actually similar to the Google Home Max. Both are great options to pick up, and you really can't go wrong grabbing either of these.
Sonos doesn't typically launch new products every year. In fact, the PLAYBASE that it debuted over the summer, was the first new product it had released in a few years. The Sonos One that launched this fall is new, but it is really a repackaged PLAY:1 with Amazon Alexa built-in. Which is great to see, but still not really a new product, per se. So if you are excited about the price drop on the PLAY:1 or PLAY:3, don't think that you'll see a new version of either speaker coming in the next few months (i.e. Sonos looking to clear its stock). If you got a gift card over the holidays, this would be a great purchase, and right now, Amazon has it even cheaper, coming in at just $143.99, making it an even sweeter deal than the permanent price drop.
