OnePlus 5 Getting Face Unlock Soon, OnePlus 3 & 3T To Follow

The OnePlus 5T arrived with a Face Unlock feature, and it seems like both the OnePlus 3, OnePlus 3T and OnePlus 5T will all follow suit. Carl Pei promised quite recently that the OnePlus 5 will be getting Face Unlock, and he actually mentioned it again in a new blog post, stating that it will roll out via a beta build to the phone in the near future. Having said that, Carl Pei also hinted that Face Unlock will be making its way to the OnePlus 3 and 3T in that very same blog post, as he asked OnePlus’ consumers whether they’d like to see it happen, which is an obvious hint.

We do know that Face Unlock will make its way to the OnePlus 5 really soon, but we have no idea when will it reach the OnePlus 3 and 3T, though it will, for sure, first arrive to the OnePlus 5, as expected. OnePlus’ Face Unlock feature actually utilizes the front-facing camera that is included on a phone, and it’s actually extremely fast. OnePlus’ Face Unlock feature might not work flawlessly in low light, but as long as there’s some light included so that your face is shown, Face Unlock feature is really handy to have. In order to activate Face Unlock, you do need to power on the display first, either by double tapping it, or by hitting the power button. OnePlus did say that a fingerprint scanner is still way more secure than Face Unlock, as expected, but Face Unlock is also a rather convenient way for locking your device down, and some people actually prefer it.

The OnePlus 3 and 3T were announced last year, while the OnePlus 5 landed back in June this year. All of those handsets are still quite powerful, and it’s not exactly surprising that OnePlus is planning to bring Face Unlock to all three phones, as Face Unlock uses a front-facing camera, so no additional hardware is necessary to make it happen, it’s all about software. It may be a bit surprising that the OnePlus 3 and 3T will get it, but the OnePlus 5 is quite similar to the OnePlus 5T in many ways, as far as hardware is concerned, so that was to be expected, even though initial reports suggested that Face Unlock will stay exclusive to the OnePlus 5T.
