Xiaomi started teasing a new "Desh ka" Android smartphone that will soon launch in India as a Flipkart exclusive, with the Chinese original equipment manufacturer suggesting that its upcoming device will be designed for multitasking and facilitating one's everyday activities. Such generic selling points don't reveal any significant details about the device, though its first teaser video that can be seen below indicates that Xiaomi is working on an entry-level offering and one that will feature a traditional smartphone aesthetic with regular-sized bezels and a physical Home button which likely won't double as a fingerprint scanner.
In Hindi, a "Desh ka smartphone" would literally mean "the national smartphone" or "the country's smartphone," with that particular moniker suggesting a high level of localization, a common practice utilized by Xiaomi that historically launched a wide variety of India-exclusive devices specifically catering to consumers in the South Asian country. The first teaser for the handset also implies it will differentiate from other entry-level devices on the market by offering a much more powerful battery which shouldn't have any issues lasting through an entire day on a single charge, something that not many phones in this price range are capable of.
According to recent rumors, the upcoming handset may be the Redmi 5A that Xiaomi already launched in its home country in mid-October, pricing it at the equivalent of $90. While the device may feature new software designed specifically for Indian users, its internal specs aren't likely to change should it launch in India. The original phone sported a 5-inch display with an HD resolution of 1,280 by 720 pixels and was powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 425 and 2GB of RAM, in addition to offering 16GB of expandable storage space and running Android 7.0 Nougat out of the box, coupled with the company's own MIUI 9. The rear panel of the Redmi 5A accommodates a 13-megapixel camera, whereas its top bezel sports a 5-megapixel sensor, and the phone itself comes with a Hybrid SIM setup. The 3,000mAh battery that's part of the package can supposedly last up to eight days on a single charge, which is another hint that the Redmi 5A will either be rebranded or advertised as the "Desh ka smartphone" in India. Should the device launch in the country, it will likely come with a price tag of around Rs. 5,800. Xiaomi already confirmed its next Android smartphone will be unveiled in India on Thursday, November 30th.
