This App Will Remap Active Edge On The Google Pixel 2, XL

The Google Pixel 2 and 2 XL come with a number of selling points although one of the features that is largely reserved for these devices is their use of Active Edge. While this is mostly identical to HTC’s Edge Sense feature found on the HTC U11, the difference with Active Edge is that it is far more limited in its approach. As in spite of HTC allowing device owners to decide on the outcome of squeezing the Edge Sense sensors, Google does not. So out of the box, Active Edge does only allow Pixel 2 and 2 XL owners to initiate Google Assistant.

Of course, that is out of the box. As once out of the box and with the help of the wider Android ecosystem, limitations are no longer quite the same as they were before. Which is the case with Active Edge thanks to ‘Button Mapper: Remap your keys.’ This is an app that is available to download from the Google Play Store and one which was updated this week with a Norwegian translation. That and the ability to “remap Active Edge (squeeze) on Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL.”

In many ways this works much in the same was as the various apps that came to attention when owners of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Plus were trying to find a way to remap the ‘Bixby button’ - so it could do more than just activate Bixby. As a result, and once the app is installed, the interface is fairly straightforward and offers the option to reassign the feature associated with Active Edge. This not only includes the ability to assign actions such as ‘take a screenshot’ or ‘power down the device’ but also the ability to set installed apps to respond to Active Edge. The video below provides a good demonstration on how the app works and what sort of functionality you can expect from downloading. While the link below will take you through to the Google Play Store listing for the app and more information, as well as the option to download. It is worth noting that this app does include in-app purchases ranging from $0.99 to $19.99, although it is understood that the reassigning of Active Edge is one of the features that is offered without having to pay.
