Huawei has announced two new smartwatches in China, including the new Huawei Watch 2 Pro and the special edition PORSCHE DESIGN Huawei Watch 2, originally unveiled back at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017 back in February. Both wearables share similar specifications, including an eSIM for 4G LTE connectivity independently from a smartphone, but the PORSCHE DESIGN version sports a more premium build and a significantly higher price tag. The new smartwatches are arriving in China alongside the new Huawei Mate 10 series of smartphones, which were announced recently in Germany.
Design-wise, the new Huawei Watch 2 Pro doesn’t stray too far from the previous Huawei Watch 2 Classic, but the eSIM support does mark a notable upgrade. The new smartwatch features a stainless steel body, a ceramic bezel around the display, and an Italian leather strap. The PORSCHE DESIGN version features the PORSCHE DESIGN logo on its bezel and a leather strap with red stitching, echoing the signature Porsche color. Both smartwatches sport circular form factors, aiming to mimic classical watches. In terms of specifications, the wearables come with 1.2-inch AMOLED displays with a resolution of 390 x 390 pixels, with Gorilla Glass on top to protect against scratches. Under the hood, Huawei packed a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon Wear 2100 SoC, 768MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and Android Wear 2.0 on the software side.
The smartwatches pack 420mAh batteries that can last up to 1.5 days on a single charge, dedicated heart rate sensors, and IP68 certification for dust and water resistance. The wearables further sport GPS and Beidou for tracking, and Huawei Pay NFC payments with support for various bank cards, as well as AliPay and WeChat Pay. The eSIM allows the smartwatches to connect to a 4G LTE network without requiring a physical SIM card. With 4G connectivity, the wearables enable owners to handle voice calls and messages without smartphone pairing. The smartwatches can also pair with smartphones running Android or iOS. When it comes to pricing and availability, the Huawei Watch 2 Pro will hit China on November 1 at a 2,588 Yuan (roughly $390) price point, while the PORSCHE DESIGN Huawei Watch 2 will go on sale on November 15 with a significantly higher price tag of 4,988 Yuan (about $750).
