Facebook, reportedly, is looking for a few new employees to add to its company. However these employees are going to be a bit different from the usual crop that Facebook hires. According to Bloomberg, Facebook is looking for employees that have national security clearance. That is not something you'd normally see under "requirements" for a job in Silicon Valley, but Facebook wants that credential so it can help spot election meddling in the future, after failing to spot it during the 2016 Presidential election.
These employees would be able to receive and access information that is classified by the US government. By adding these employees to its payroll, Facebook would get information about potential threats, and be able to proactively search for questionable social media campaigns ahead of elections and other events. This is all coming from someone familiar with the matter, who was unnamed, since the information is sensitive as you'd expect. After the 2016 Presidential Election, in which Facebook found that Russia used many different Facebook pages, as well as buying ads targeting Hillary Clinton supporters, the company is looking for ways to combat this new issue. And it appears that picking up employees that have access to confidential material is how Facebook is going to get this done.
Typically, national security clearances expire once an individual leaves the government, which means it wouldn't be applicable to someone working at Facebook. However, according to the person that Bloomberg talked too, it could be reactivated for Facebook, of course that is something that would need to be worked out with The White House. And its easier to get it reactivated instead of needing to be cleared altogether, which is why Facebook is looking for those that have national security clearance currently. This is a pretty interesting approach for Facebook, but it does show that the social media platform is taking things seriously and wants to keep election meddling from happening again, after all, it has happened in the France and UK elections this year, after the US presidential election last November. So it's clear that Russia is going to continue this until they are no longer able too.
