Xiaomi is working on a new Android phone that's codenamed the MDE 2, one industry insider said on Friday. The source provided no other information on the matter, with the codename itself not being indicative of any particular model that the company is currently said to be working on. Regardless, the Beijing, China-based original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is expected to release the Mi Mix 2, Mi Note 3, and possibly the Mi 6 Plus in the coming months, indicating that the MDE 2 might be one of those models.
The Mi Note 3 is said to feature a 5.7-inch display panel with a resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels and be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip (SoC) and 6GB of RAM, in addition to boasting at least 64GB of internal flash memory expandable via a microSD card slot. According to previous reports, the Mi Mix 2 will sport an almost bezel-less design and a 6.4-inch screen with a resolution of 2040 by 1080 pixels, suggesting an unconventional aspect ratio that's close to the 18:9 image format commercialized by LG Electronics with the LG G6 earlier this year. Other than that, the upcoming phablet is also thought to sport Qualcomm's latest piece of silicon, 6GB of RAM, 64GB /128GB of storage space, and a 4,400mAh battery that likely won't be removable, as well as a dual camera setup comprising two 16-megapixel lenses situated on its rear panel. The Mi 6 Plus is the most mysterious device of the three, with the phone itself originally expected to be unveiled in April when Xiaomi launched the 5.15-inch Mi 6. As the Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer didn't reveal the handset this spring and offered no indication that it has any plans to do so in the future, some industry watchers recently speculated that the Mi 6 Plus has been scrapped.
While Xiaomi has been diversifying its business strategy in recent years in an effort to run a more sustainable operation going forward, the tech giant is still largely reliant on its smartphone unit that accounts for a significant portion of its revenue. More details on the company's upcoming handsets and possibly the rumored MDE 2 may follow later this year.
