Camera capabilities of the OnePlus 5 are comparable to those of the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus, one industry insider said on Monday. The source made that claim on Chinese social media website Weibo that identified their post as originating from the OnePlus 5, giving more credence to recent reports that the Shenzhen, Guangdong-based original equipment manufacturer (OEM) opted to send early prototypes of its next Android flagship to ten reviewers in the Far Eastern country. With the device being only a few weeks away from its official launch, OnePlus is likely looking to use popular tech bloggers and other community influencers to promote its latest premium handset.

While the industry insider comparing the imaging prowess of the OnePlus 5 to that of the Galaxy S8-series devices may have gotten access to an early unit of the phone, they didn't provide more details on the handset that's heavily rumored to ship with a dual camera setup consisting of two horizontally arranged sensors and a dual LED, dual tone flash unit located in the top-left corner of its rear panel. Apart from being the first OnePlus-branded device with a dual camera setup, the OnePlus 5 may also differentiate from its competitors by featuring software developed by DxO Labs, a Boulogne-Billancourt, France-based imaging software firm. The Chinese company already confirmed that the French software firm participated in the development of the OnePlus 5, though it didn't provide more information on the matter.

According to previous rumors and official teasers, the OnePlus 5 will be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip (SoC) and boast a 5.5-inch QHD display panel protected by 2.5D glass. The Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer is expected to offer two variants of the device with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal memory and 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage space, respectively. While neither is likely to feature a microSD card slot, both are expected to be significantly thinner than the 2016 OnePlus 3T, in addition to improving on its imaging performance and the overall user experience. Recent rumors indicated that the OnePlus 5 might be unveiled as early as June 15, so more details on the upcoming handset should follow shortly.
