New “Order Food” Option Now Showing Up On Facebook

It seems Facebook is now allowing its users to order food through a new “Order Food” tool that is now live on both the mobile and desktop versions of the site. The new option can be found via the user’s Facebook page main menu and once the ‘Order Food’ tab is clicked, the user is able to place a food order (delivery or pickup) from a number of nearby restaurants and eateries. As to be expected with such an embedded feature, the Order Food option occurs completely (from start to finish) within the Facebook site. So while the orders are effectively being processed by third-party services ( and Slice), the whole experience occurs for the user without having to leave Facebook.

Technically speaking, this is not a new feature as Facebook has for some time allowed orders to be placed at restaurants and eateries through the respective Facebook pages for those restaurants and eateries. However, the difference here is a more streamlined and universal approach which does not require the user to head to the Facebook’s listing for a specific establishment first. In fact, it does not even require the user to know beforehand which establishment they want to order from. As the Order Food tab will bring together all relevant and nearby locations for the user to choose from - in an almost identical manner to how general food delivery apps and services work.

It is also worth pointing out that while this is only a new way to order through Facebook (opposed to a new feature in itself), it is unclear when it first began to show up for users. Likewise, as Facebook has not officially announced the new route to order, it is unclear whether it is showing up for all users right now, or just for some as part of an initial test. In addition, it is also unclear how much of a ‘finished product’ it is or whether it still is a little temperamental. In either case, it is live for some, and those interested can see if it is live for them by heading over to Facebook, and checking the side menu on either desktop or mobile, and looking for the “Order Food” option.
