LG V20 Receiving May 2017 Security Patch From T-Mobile

T-Mobile started pushing out the May Android Security Update for all LG V20 units on its network, as revealed by the company's recently updated support pages for the handset. The third largest mobile service provider in the country has been rolling out the new software package for LG's 2016 flagship since Thursday, meaning the update should already be available for download to most — if not all — owners of the LG V20 that are using T-Mobile's network. Like all other Android-powered devices on the market, the LG V20 will periodically scan for new software updates and notify owners about their availability through push notifications.

T-Mobile subscribers using the latest V-series smartphone who still haven't received the notification prompting them to download the new patch can search for it manually by launching the Settings system app, opening the "About" menu, and tapping the "Software update" option on the following screen. In case this course of action doesn't trigger the update to download and you're still running an older security patch, you should probably just remain patient for a few more days and wait for T-Mobile to complete its latest over-the-air (OTA) rollout. Apart from a set of fixes for various vulnerabilities of the Android operating system, the latest software package for the LG V20 also eliminates the so-called "e911 timer" bug and debuts a number of tweaks and changes meant to improve the stability of the phone's operating system, as revealed by T-Mobile's official support pages. The update is just under 150MB in size and users are advised to download it over a Wi-Fi network in order to avoid spending their mobile data. Likewise, the phone should either be charging or have at least 50 percent of battery left prior to the installation.

The release of the new security patch for LG V20 units on T-Mobile's network is the first software update that the company launched for the device since mid-January, with the phone itself still running Android 7.0 Nougat that it shipped with last October, thus becoming the first handset to run Nougat out of the box. It remains to be seen whether the Bellevue, Washington-based wireless carrier starts updating the LG V20 in a more regular manner in the future, but additional details on the matter should be available shortly.
