Vodafone India Unveils iRoamFREE International Roaming Plans

Vodafone India has unveiled a number of new international roaming plans for its subscribers. Called i-RoamFREE, the new plans are said to offer “home-like tariffs while roaming in 47 countries”. There are at least four different plans on offer as part of the new launch, and what’s really noteworthy, is that each of them come with truly unlimited calls and high-speed data in the US, UAE and Singapore. In the other 44 countries, outgoing calls will be charged at a highly-discounted Rs. 1 (1.5 cents) per minute, while high-speed data will cost just Rs. 1 per MB. Incoming calls in all of the 47 destinations will remain free. The plans are available in the form of pre-paid top-ups, so users won’t have to worry about additional charges showing up on their bills later on.

According to Vodafone’s press release from earlier today, the iRoamFREE pack will be available at four different price-points depending on the duration. To start off, there’s a Rs. 500 ($7.5) pack that will be valid for just 24 hours. Next up, there’s a Rs. 2,500 ($23) option with a validity of seven days. The two other plans would cost Rs. 3,500 ($38) and Rs. 5,000 ($75), and come with validity of 10-days and 30-days respectively. What’s even more interesting is that frequent travelers can opt for a flexible option that will allow them to activate the iRoamFREE pack once, and enjoy the benefits automatically whenever they step into any of the forty-seven countries on the list. Users opting for this option will be charged at Rs. 500 per day.

On the occasion of the launch of these new plans, the Director – Commercial of Vodafone India, Mr. Sandeep Kataria, released a statement, saying that the company hopes these plans will help international travelers by eliminating the hassle of having to change SIM cards when traveling abroad. Which is something most international travelers are forced to do to avoid the inordinately high roaming charges levied by most carriers in the country. Either way, it will be interesting to see whether these new plans will help the company retain its high-value customers in the coming days, given how Reliance Jio has been gaining momentum ever since the carrier entered the Indian telecom space last year with extremely lucrative rates for high-speed LTE data.
