TP-Link Launches Deco M5, Mesh Wi-Fi With Antivirus

TP-Link has launched Deco M5 Whole-Home Wi-Fi System, a mesh networking solution with built-in antivirus and malware security features from TrendMicro. By launching Deco M5, TP-Link aims to provide comprehensive wireless coverage in the home, and security features against malware and hackers integrated into its mesh networking product through a feature named TP-Link HomeCare. Inside the package, there are three Deco M5 units, all of which can be strategically placed in different locations to provide wireless coverage. These units support 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi with maximum data speeds of 867Mbps on the 5GHz band. When properly placed, three Deco M5 units can provide coverage to a maximum floor area of 4,500 square feet (418 square meters). Just in case there is a need to cover a larger area, up to 10 Deco M5 units can be connected to the mesh network.

A quad-core processor is found inside of the units, which is used to power features like Adaptive Routing Technology. Adaptive Routing Technology, TP-Link claims, ensures the fastest speeds possible for devices connected to the mesh network by searching for the shortest and fastest route for the devices to connect to the mesh network. Accompanying the Deco M5 is the Deco mobile app, which TP-Link claims will help the users breeze through the set-up process with comprehensive instructions and visuals. Once the set-up process is finished, the Deco mobile app becomes a very useful tool in managing the network. Among the features incorporated in the app is the remote control of the mesh network, which ensures control and security of the home network even if the owner is outside the home. Deco Mobile app also has parental control features, with controls over what applications and URLs can be accessed in the network at certain times of the day.

The Deco M5 mesh networking solution is available at HSN, TP-Link website, and other retailers for $299, with the only retail option is a package containing 3 units of Deco M5. By comparison, Google Home is more widely available via more popular retail outlets, with more package options of either purchasing a single unit, or a pack with three units. Meanwhile, the security features provided by TrendMicro as part of the TP-Link HomeCare suite are free for the first three years of use, after which the user is provided the option to subscribe to TrendMicro's services with a monthly subscription fee.
