According to reports now coming out of Canada, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) will be launched in the country on March 17. The unlocked, SIM-free version of the device is rumored to cost CAD 499.99 off-contract, but the smartphone will also reportedly be available on two-year contracts through a number of leading carriers in the country, including the likes of Bell, Rogers and Virgin Mobile. The Galaxy A5 (2017), along with its larger and more expensive sibling, the Galaxy A7 (2017), have already been launched in quite a few countries around the world, so Canadian consumers wanting to get their hands on a brand new mid-range smartphone from Samsung will probably be happy to know that the Galaxy A5 (2017) is close to making its Canadian debut.
The Galaxy A5 (2017) is a mid-range smartphone aimed mostly at the pre-paid market. The handset features a 5.2-inch 1080p Super AMOLED touchscreen display and is powered by an Exynos 7880 SoC, which comes with an integrated octa-core CPU clocked at a frequency of 1.9 GHz. The device comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage. Imaging options on the handset include 16-megapixel cameras on both the front and back. While both cameras come with f/1.9 apertures, the rear-facing shooter is also accompanied by an LED flash. Connectivity options include 4G LTE with VoLTE support, Wi-Fi 802.11ac and Bluetooth v4.2, while sensors include an accelerometer, an ambient light sensor, a barometer, a magnetometer (e-compass) and a proximity sensor. The device also comes with a fingerprint scanner and an NFC chip.
The Galaxy A5 (2017) comes with a 3,000 mAh battery with support for fast charging. The device also has an IP68 certification, suggesting it will be waterproof and dust-proof. The phone also offers a number of software features, such as the Samsung KNOX security solution and the S-Voice intelligent personal assistant. The device is also compatible with Samsung Pay, which was launched in Canada late last year. While the Galaxy A5 (2015) comes with many new features, it still runs the now-dated Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) with the company’s proprietary TouchWiz UI on top. The handset measures 146.1 mm in length, 71.1 mm in width and 7.9 mm in thickness.
