This week the Android TV Remote Service Android app has made its way to the Google Play Store. This is an app from Google which works in conjunction with the actual Android TV Remote Control app which many Android TV owners will already likely be familiar with. As a result, there is not much use in this particular app from the end user perspective. For instance, you cannot really install this on your smartphone like you would the other app. Although, that does not mean that this app is not useful.

As the difference between the two apps is that the Android TV Remote Service app is essentially what is installed on your Android TV device and allows the Android TV Remote Control app to connect to it. Offering the features and abilities that come with the Android TV Remote Control app. The benefit of the Android TV Remote Service app making its way to the Google Play Store is that users might be able to update their receiver app (the Android TV Remote Control Service) directly from the Google Play Store, or via an OTA going forward. Instead of having to rely on Android TV device manufacturers to push the update out individually. Moving apps to the Google Play Store for easier updating purposes has been a trend of late with many manufacturers adopting this process, including Google with a number of its own apps, like this one

If you have yet to give the Android TV Remote Control app a try, then now might be a time to consider doing so. The app is a little bare bones in all honesty, as it does not provide much in the way of additional functionality. Not to mention, there are other better apps available. However, and this is a big however, when you do lose or misplace your Android TV remote control, having the Android TV Remote Control app installed on your smartphone and linked to your Android TV, can literally be a lifesaver. While you can always fall back on the app and download it when you need it, it is advisable to have this installed and linked already.
