Another Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) variant has cleared the FCC, carrying model number “SM-A520W”. Readers who may be familiar with Samsung’s usual method of assigning model numbers to its products should be aware that the “W” suffix is usually attributed to devices planned for a market launch in Canada. Needless to say, the SM-A520W is most likely the Canadian version of the new Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017), and given that it has already been certified by the regulatory agency, the smartphone’s market launch north of the US could be just around the corner.

Up until now the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) has been announced and released in a handful of regions, including the United Kingdom and Russia, and judging by these recent events it seems like Canada might follow suit fairly soon. Although hardware specifications have not been mentioned by the FCC, we expect the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) “SM-A520W” to boast roughly the same components as its counterparts from other regions. This includes a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 and a pixel density of around 424 pixels per inch, an Exynos 7880 System-on-Chip featuring eight Cortex-A53 cores clocked at frequencies of up to 1.9GHz, a Mali-T830 MP3 3-core graphics chip, and 3GB of RAM. Furthermore, the handset accommodates 32GB of on-board memory expandable via microSD, and features a 16-megapixel camera on the back panel, coupled with a 16-megapixel front-facing sensor. The device is powered by Android 6 Marshmallow out of the box, and it draws energy from a 3,000mAh Li-Ion non-removable battery. As a smartphone aiming to fit in the upper mid-range market, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) also employs a fingerprint recognition sensor embedded within the physical home button, as well as a USB Type-C reversible connector.

There’s no official word in regards to when the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) will be launched in Canada, but given that the smartphone is already available in certain regions around the world and considering the recent FCC clearance, the so-called “SM-A520W” is likely to hit the shelves soon. As far as pricing is concerned, the Samsung Galaxy A5 (2017) unlocked sells for around £360 in the UK, which convert to around $450 at today’s exchange rate.
