CES 2017 Hands-On: Sony’s New EXTRA BASS Bluetooth Speakers

At CES 2017, Sony introduced the latest additions to its popular line of EXTRA BASS products, including two new headphones and four speakers. In terms of the speakers, these are of course, Bluetooth speakers, and therefore do offer you the ability to connect wirelessly to your smartphone or any other Bluetooth-enabled device. Generally speaking, the four new lines of speakers are very similar, although they do come with some notably differences.

The ‘baby’ of the bunch is certainly the Sony SRS-XB10. This is a rather small Bluetooth speaker and one which will be ideal for those looking to carry a speaker around with them. This one is driven by a mono 46 mm speaker and does offer battery life in the range of 16 hours. Next up (in size) is the Sony SRS-XB20. This one adopts a larger form factor and is more consistent with the two bigger new options. As such you can expect 42 mm drivers to be included, as well as a battery which can last about 12 hours. In addition, this one comes equipped with a frame which lights up, albeit in a single color. The Sony SRS-XB30 is quite similar to the Sony SRS-XB20, although this one does come with larger 48 mm drivers, an increased 24-hour battery life and the same lighting frame effect, but with a more multicolored style. While the most expensive of the new speakers, the Sony SRS-XB40, does all the same things but better. For instance, the multicolored lighting effect on this one comes with a flash feature too. So it is perfect for your next party.

In terms of when you can pick up these speakers, Sony has so far only detailed European times and prices. So all that is known at the moment is that the full Sony SRS-XB range will be available starting in April/May (in Europe) and prices will be on an ascending scale from £60/€70 for the Sony SRS-XB10 up to £200/€240 for the Sony SRS-XB40. As you might expect from the EXTRA BASS range, all the speakers will be available in a variety of colors. Some of which you can check out in our hands-on images below.
