The ASUS ZenFone 3 has started receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update, according to news coming out of the Philippines earlier today. The two variants that are now getting the latest flavor of Android are the ZE520KL and ZE552KL, both of which were launched last year by the Taiwan-based tech firm as replacements for its second-generation ZenFone 2, and came with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box. The new software brings a whole lot of new features to the two ZenFone 3 devices, including multi-window support, as well as notification control changes. The detailed changelog doesn’t seem to be available at the moment, and nor is there a whole lot of detail available about either the size of the download or the exact build number(s).
Either way, now that one of the third-generation ZenFone devices has started receiving the Android Nougat update, it will be interesting to see how long it takes for the company to roll out the new flavor of Android to a couple of its other premium ZenFone 3 models - the ZenFone 3 Deluxe and the ZenFone 3 Ultra. The company has so far guaranteed Android Nougat for only a few of its devices that were released last year, leaving out its latest mid-rangers from the list, including the ZenFone 3 Laser and the ZenFone 3 Max. The list, however, is not exhaustive, so some other devices may yet get the much-anticipated update in the coming weeks and months, although it remains doubtful whether too many from the ZenFone 2 lineup will join the list at any stage.
The ASUS ZenFone 3 line was launched last year by the Taiwanese firm as a replacement for its aging ZenFone 2 line that was first announced back in 2015. As is the case with the entire lineup of ASUS smartphones, the naming convention has often been dubbed ‘confusing’ by large sections of the media and consumers alike, although the devices themselves are well-build and well-spec’d for the most part. The ZenFone 3 comes in two versions; one with a 5.2-inch display (ZE520KL) and another, with a 5.5-inch screen (ZE552KL). Now that both these devices are reportedly receiving the Android Nougat update from ASUS, it will be interesting to see when the pricier ZenFone 3 Ultra and the flagship ZenFone 3 Deluxe will get the all-new software.
