Once a market leader in a digital imaging and photography, Kodak decided to take on smartphone photography and launched its first ever smartphone running Android OS called the Kodak IM5 last year, and now it appears that the company will soon be launching one more smartphone to showcase its camera expertise in a smartphone. Though the company had originally introduced the Kodak Ektra back in September, but it's only now that we're getting details about its final launch date.
The new smartphone will primarily be available in Europe with other markets getting it later on. Unlike the Kodak IM5, which was launched back in June last year, the Kodak Ektra appears to be a mid-to-high-end device, both design-wise and hardware-wise. Since this is a photography-cenric smartphone, let's talk about what it has to offer for photography enthusiasts. For the main camera, the Kodak Ektra is using a 21-megapixel Sony IMX230 sensor, which is a bit odd move as Kodak has been promoting the device as being camera-centric and the fact that the IMX230 was launched almost a two years ago, is a bit of a disappointment that the Kodak Ektra is not using the more recent camera sensor, which could have proved more wise move considering the device's photography niche. The 21-megapixel sensor comes with an f/2.0 aperture, 6-axis OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), PDAF (Phase Detection Autofocus) and a dual-tone LED flash. Talking about the software side of the camera, the device comes with a wide range of photography modes that include: HDR, Portrait, Macro, Sport, Panorama, Night-time and bokeh, while it also comes with a manual mode as well, so that power users can play around with things like ISO and shutter speed to get a better control over the situation.
As far as other specifications are concerned, the Kodak Ektra features a 5-inch Full HD IPS display with a resolution of a 1920 × 1080. Under-the-hood, it has a MediaTek Helio X20 64-bit deca-core SoC, which is paired with 3GB RAM and 32GB of onboard storage, and a 13-megapixel front shooter is also included here. A 3000mAh battery is also a part of this package, and the phone comes running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow out of the box. The Kodak Ektra will go on sale starting December 9th at a price of €499 in Europe, while other markets could expect the launch in their countries by early 2017.
