Throughout the year, people are ‘Googling’ every day – several times a day – in an effort to collect information or to enlighten one’s knowledge. Back in the day, many kept a dictionary beside them to look up words or people, but now we have a 3-inch x 6-inch wealth of knowledge at our fingertips, called a smartphone. We can google any topic or any subject any time, day, or night. Google makes their money on searches and advertisements so naturally, they keep track of what we ‘Google.’ They can learn much about societies’ interests, both good and bad. Google just released the top Google subjects in Canada for 2016.
When it comes to Canadian politicians, Rob Ford still tops the list, followed by Kellie Leitch, Brad Wall, Doug Ford, and rounding the top five, Kathleen Wynne. Which Canadians did Canadians search this past year? Drake tops the list, followed by Céline Dion, Gord Downie, Leonard Cohen, and Penny Oleksiak. The celebrities and musicians searched ended up being one in the same list – Drake, Beyoncé, Rihanna, Céline Dion, and Kanye West. When it came to news stories, it looks like Canadians are interested in Donald Trump as their number one search item. The US Elections, Zika Virus, Fort McMurray Fire, and the Olympics followed. When it came to ‘who’s who,’ the search for Harambe, the gorilla from the zoo, topped the list. Next was who is Ken Bone, Ann Coulter, the father of Bridget Jones’ baby, and who is George Soros? When it comes to TV shows, Stranger Things topped the list, followed by Westworld, Gilmore Girls, Fuller House, and Luke Cage.
Now for the fun side of topics and searches – what were the most searched toys? Pokémon, Hatchimals, Trolls, Baby Alive and Num Noms.
