Verizon Opens Pre-Orders for Mophie's Moto Z Battery Mod

The latest Motorola smartphone series dubbed Moto Z was introduced by Lenovo earlier this summer as a response to the concept of modular smartphones. Moto Z devices can be paired with magnetic back covers that snap into place to expand the handsets' functionality, and the company promotes its own modules while allowing third party manufacturers to create their own. Mophie counts among the third-party brands to hop on board with Motorola's vision, and Verizon – being one of the US carriers to offer the Moto Z series in the country under the "Droid" sub-brand – has now started offering the Mophie Battery Mod on pre-order terms for the price of $79.99.

As the name suggests, the Mophie Battery Mod is a so-called "juice pack" or battery bank designed to breathe more life into compatible Motorola smartphones. As with other Moto Mods, Mophie's battery bank snaps on the back of Moto devices using integrated magnets, and specifically the module is compatible with the Moto Z Droid, Moto Z Force Droid, and Moto Z Play Droid with Moto Mods platform 1.0 or later. The module contains a 3,000 mAh battery said to provide "more than 60 percent extra battery" and is equipped with a USB-C port to facilitate 15W fast charging. The battery pack also carries an LED power indicator below the "mophie" logo, offering information regarding battery levels and charge status. Given the battery bank's capacity, it's also worth noting that the Moto Mod in question carries more juice than the stock / unmodded Motorola Moto Z Droid, which relies on a 2,600 mAh battery. In contrast, the Moto Z Force Droid and Moto Z Play Droid carry a 3,500 mAh and 3,510 mAh battery, respectively.

Overall, the Mophie Battery Mod juice pack measures 153 x 73 x 8.8 millimeters and weighs 109 grams, adding a bit of extra weight on top of the 136 – 164 grams Moto Z and Moto Z Force / Z Play. The mod is currently available for pre-order from Verizon Wireless' online store for the price of $79.99 and is available only in black. The item has an estimated shipping date of November 28, but as is usually the case with pre-purchases, shipping dates remain subject to change.
