The headphone market is an undeniably-large market to be part of these days, and as smartphones are evolving, with the humble headphone jack starting to be phased out by some, it’s no wonder that consumers are starting to look ahead to a world of wireless headphones, using Bluetooth technology. This was the first year that wireless headphone sales started to fight back in a meaningful way against wired headphone sales, and while there are some inexpensive options out there, users are often left unimpressed by the clarity and overall build quality of these cheaper options. New York’s Master & Dynamic is a luxury headphone brand that is trying very hard to change all of this, and first did so with last year’s MW60, now they’re back with the new MW50.
At $449, these won’t be winning any awards for budget headphone of the year, but where they might win awards for is in their build quality, excellent clarity and long Bluetooth range. Similarly to the excellent MW60, the MW50 are made from genuine leather and all-aluminum parts for the outer-casing. These are a set of on-ear headphones that are designed to last the listener decades, and the fit and finish on these is where much of the money goes when purchasing a pair. Excellent looks and long-lasting build aside, master & Dynamic have a house sound that’s warm, clear and resonant, appealing to modern listeners without doing your favorite artists injustice in that endeavor. To achieve that with the MW50, the firm is using a custom 40mm beryllium driver.
Where the Bluetooth side of things are concerned – these work just fine with a 3.5mm cable, too – the MW50 lasts for 16 hours on a single charge, which is recharged via the Type-C port on the ear cups, which is also where the play/pause, connect and skip buttons can be found. 30 percent smaller than the MW60, the MW50 are a more portable pair of wireless headphones, and with a range of 100 feet away from your phone or computer, they’re more than happy to join you wherever you’re headed. The MW50 are available from Master & Dynamic’s website right now in either Black Leather or Brown Leather, and those interested in a closer look can take a look at the gallery below.
