It's never been as easy as it has been to get our hands on our favorite TV shows or movies than it is today. With the likes of Netflix, Hulu and Amazon not only making their own shows but also providing access to some of our favorites, it's pretty easy to be spoiled for choice. For those users out there that know what they like and know how to get it, Plex has long been the preferred distribution platform to get this content on to their TV sets. Plex has been around on Android for some time, and with Chromecast support, the app has become a valuable tool in the cord cutter's arsenal. Now, in version 5.0, some new features have been added, along with a raft of bug fixes, too.

As the Plex post suggests, version 5.0 is a significant upgrade, with a complete revamp of how searching from within the app works. The team have changed not just the UI, but also added in the option to search for particular tracks, certain artists and certain actors, all of which draws upon integration with online databases that Plex has become known for over the years. Speaking of databases, Plex version 5.0 features a shrunk down version of the core Plex Media Server, which makes the Android app a little more than the client it has been for years now. One of the headlining changes for those on Android TV is the fact that users can now seek within a file using the remote, triggers of a connected controller and other input devices they have connected. Meanwhile, those using a Fire TV stick or box and looking to get access to Plex Pass can now do so from within the app in version 5.0.

Plex is available via the Play Store for Android smartphones, tablets as well as Android TV and it's available via the Amazon Appstore for the Fire TV Box and Fire TV Sticks. While the update appears to be live in the Google Play Store, the update's changelog notes that it will be arriving in the Amazon Appstore "soon". Those looking to install it via the Play Store, or check if the update is ready, can do so by clicking the button below.

For years now I've had a heavy interest in technology, growing up with 8-bit computers and gaming consoles has fed into an addiction to everything that beeps. Android saved me from the boredom of iOS years ago and I love watching the platform grow. As an avid reader and writer nothing pleases me more than to write about the exciting world of Android, Google and mobile technology as a whole.
