The ‘Direct Share’ feature was introduced along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. This feature essentially lets you share links to specific contacts, or conversations, within specific apps. This feature needs to be enabled by specific apps in order to work, developers need to code it in, essentially, and it can only work on Android 6.0 Marshmallow or higher. Now, Facebook’s Messenger app (it's called 'Messenger' now, but we'll refer to it as 'Facebook Messenger' in order to avoid the confusion) was not one of the apps which sported this feature, well, at least until now, a new update actually brings this feature to the app, and quite a few users will be more than happy to use it, as this was one of the most requested features for Facebook Messenger for a while now.
The Direct Share feature can be really useful as it saves you some time when sharing links, because it basically filters your most contacted contacts / conversations (from apps which support Quick Share) and offers you the option to share to them directly without looking through the whole list of apps after you hit the ‘share’ option. Well, this feature is now available on Facebook Messenger, at least if you’re running the latest version of the app, v.220.127.116.11.69. Do keep in mind that you’ll need Android 6.0 Marshmallow or Android 7.0 Nougat on your device to take advantage of this feature, if you’re running anything less than that you won’t have access to Direct Share. Once you hit the share option for a link or whatever else you’re sharing through Android’s system share, you’ll see the contacts / conversations from Facebook Messenger, along with those from Google’s Hangouts app, for example. This app was launched back in 2011 on Android, and it has been downloaded over 1 billion times in the Google Play Store to date, which is not exactly something a lot of apps can say for themselves. In any case, Facebook Messenger is one of the most used messaging services these days, along with WhatsApp and Viber. Facebook has been adding features to Messenger constantly, from the Material Design update that it received a while back, to various new emojis, SMS support, and so on. Direct Share is the latest in line of features added to Facebook’s Messenger app, and we wonder what is next in line.
