Specs: Samsung Gear S3 Classic, Gear S3 Frontier

Samsung has finally, officially announced the Gear S3 during IFA 2016, and while there's a lot said about the overall fit and finish of the two different models, the Gear S3 Classic and Gear S3 Frontier, these are smartwatches. As such, many of you will want to know what keeps the Gear S3 ticking, in a digital kind of way, naturally. While mostly an improvement over last year's Gear S2, the Gear S3 does have a few new tricks up its sleeve.

Front and center is the always-on, 1.3-inch Super AMOLED display, which is topped with Corning's Gorilla Glass SR+, specifically designed for smartwatches. Capable of producing 16 Million colors, with a resolution of 360 x 360 and 278 pixels per inch, the Gear S3 will make custom watch faces shine no matter the weather. Underneath this is a dual-core CPU clocked at 1.0 Ghz, with 768MB of RAM backing it up. For apps and games, there's 4GB of onboard storage, and as this is a watch, there's no sign of expandable storage here. Smartwatches like these are mostly packed with all kinds of different sensors, and the Gear S3 is no exception. With an optical heart rate sensor, a Barometer, Accelerometer, Gyroscope, and ambient light sensor, the Gear S3 is fully-loaded. There's also A-GPS and GLONASS supported added here, as well as NFC and Magnetic Secure Transmission connectivity. These two allow users to pay with Samsung Pay at practically any credit card station, regardless of whether or not Samsung Pay is supported. WiFi 802.11 b/g/n as well as Bluetooth 4.2 to connect to not only your smartphone, but also wireless headphones, is here. The Gear S3 Frontier will feature 3G and 4G LTE capabilities while the Gear S3 Classic will only offer Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity Keeping everything running is a 380 mAh battery that Samsung claims to be good for 3-4 days' worth on a single charge, and there's an included wireless charger to top things up.

Measuring 46mm wide, 49mm tall and 12.9mm thick, the Gear S3 isn't a diminutive watch, but it does only weigh just 57g. Running Samsung's own Tizen, version 2.3.2 out of the box, there's no Android Wear here, but there is still a wide array of apps available for it.

For years now I've had a heavy interest in technology, growing up with 8-bit computers and gaming consoles has fed into an addiction to everything that beeps. Android saved me from the boredom of iOS years ago and I love watching the platform grow. As an avid reader and writer nothing pleases me more than to write about the exciting world of Android, Google and mobile technology as a whole.
