BlackBerry's first Android device, the Priv, was not the hot seller that BlackBerry was hoping for. However, some of that could have been down to the $900 unlocked pricing. BlackBerry promised their next smartphone would be more affordable and the DTEK50 is set to arrive in the next few days for $429. On the heels of this new BlackBerry model, it seems as though the company has decided to cut the price of the BlackBerry Priv by $250 until the end of August, which makes it a much more comfortable $650.
The 2015 BlackBerry flagship, the Priv, sports a 5.4-inch QHD AMOLED display with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels and 540 pixels-per-inch. The sides are slightly curved like the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, and it slides open to reveal a full QWERTY physical keyboard. BlackBerry picked the Qualcomm 64-bit Snapdragon 808 hexa-core processor with a quad-core clocked at 1.4 GHz and a dual-core clocked at 1.8 GHz. An Adreno 418 GPU powers the graphics on the Priv. It comes with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal memory that is expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card. The primary camera is an 18-megapixel lens with Schneider-Kreuznach optics, f/2.2 aperture, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), dual-tone LED flash, and OIS. For the front-facing camera, BlackBerry used a 2-megapixel sensor for selfies and video chatting that can shot 720p video. It does not have a fingerprint sensor so no authorizing mobile payments, but the NFC will allow Tap and Go purchases. A non-removable 3,450 mAh battery with Quick Charge 2.0 powers the device. It has the usual suspects including WiFi, Bluetooth v4.1, GPS, NFC, and a microUSB v2.0 port for charging and data transfer. The whole device measures 147 high by 77.2 wide by 9.4 mm deep, with a weight of 192 grams.
So while this is a smartphone that is arguable high-priced for what it offers, the current discounted price does mean that it is of much better value now. If you are after more of a mid-range device then the DTEK50 will suffice. However, if you do want to check out what the best of BlackBerry on Android has to offer, then the rest of August will be a good time to do so.
