There's been plenty of speculation over the last few weeks regarding BlackBerry and this is due to the expectation that BlackBerry will introduce a new Android smartphone in the coming weeks. In fact, earlier this week and during a Security Summit held by BlackBerry, the company's CEO hinted that next week might be the time when more details about a new Android smartphone comes to light.
The most prevalent of the recent rumors is that there will be three Android smartphones coming through from BlackBerry and arriving during consecutive quarters. The first one which is thought to be arriving is one which was formerly known as 'Hamburg' and now seems to be going by the 'Neon' name. This smartphone is said to be a mid-range handset and as such, it is expected to come with a mid-range price attached.
Which is exactly what is being reported today. According to a new report emerging from The Globe and Mail, the next BlackBerry Android smartphone will become available for "about $350". The report goes on to detail that the $350 smartphone "is scheduled to arrive before September." Which just about falls in line with the Q3 release for the first of the three rumored Android smartphones. Although, the earlier reports had suggested that the first of the new BlackBerry Android smartphones could arrive as early as July. Either way, the evidence does seem to be stacking up that a new BlackBerry smartphone is very close to being announced. It is also becoming increasingly clear that this will be a mid-range smartphone. The exact details of which and whether it will be marketed under the Neon name still remains to be seen, but next week could be when such details become more commonly known.
For those wondering about the other two rumored handsets, they are currently being referred to as 'Argon' and 'Mercury' and the assumption is that one of them will be released as a very affordable and budget option while the other will be more of a high-end flagship option. In line with the rumored details, one will follow Neon in Q4 and the other will arrive in Q1 of 2017. Whether any details on either of these devices is set to become known next week also currently remains to be seen.
