If you're new to the world of Pokemon GO, there's no doubt a few things that you're probably unfamiliar with in the game, and that's ok. Your friends, as well as many others are there to help. To make the most of your gameplay in Pokemon GO, you'll definitely want to get your hands on some Incense, an in-game item which can be used to basically attract random Pokemon to your location so you don't have to travel to find them. This is not too unlike the Lure Modules which is another in-game item, although the Lure Modules are for use at PokeStops, while Incense is for use anywhere. Being a new player, however, you might be unaware of where to find Incense, and how to use it to the best of your advantage. That's where this helpful little guide comes in as it will run you through a quick set of basics.
First things first, while you can buy Incense from the in-game shop with Poke Coins, this is something you absolutely don't have to do. You will typically get an Incense upon reaching a new level and it seems possible to get them from PokeStops although this is thought to be an extremely rare occurrence. If you do choose to buy them from the Shop, you'll be able to grab them in quantities of 1, 8, and 25, with prices set at 80, 500, and 1,250 coins respectively. You start out with 0 Poke Coins but if you're leveling up and finally reach level 5, you'll be able to begin battling gyms, which is a way to earn coins aside from paying real money for them.
Once you have an Incense in your possession, using it is fairly easy and all you have to do is figure out where you want to place it, whether that's at home, or anywhere else where you won't be able to physically walk around and search for Pokemon. It's important to remember that Incense is an extremely rate commodity and only lasts for 30 minutes, so make sure you're placing it somewhere where you're going to be stationary for at least half an hour. Once decided, from the in-game menu tap on the Pokeball icon and you'll see a menu pop up that has sub-menus for the shop, the Pokedex, Pokemon, and Items. Inside the items menu is where you'll find your Incense along with any other items you may have, like Stardust. Simply tap on the Incense and it will float onto the screen, allowing you to tap it once more to put it down or tap the "x" icon below it to put it back in your inventory. Keep in mind that once the Incense is down, you'll be surrounded by the Incense as it follows a circular path around your character, and all you'll have to do is sit there with the game screen open and wait for Pokemon to show up. Once the timer on the Incense reaches zero (which continues to happen no matter if the game is open and active or not, as there is no way to stop the timer countdown), head back out and start hunting.
