Huawei Honor 5A Plus Appears On GFXBench

Huawei have enjoyed a positive eighteen months in the Android world. For much of 2015 and 2016, the Chinese company has charmed smartphone customers with a range of handsets including the premium Nexus 6P, the Android Wear-equipped Huawei Watch and a number of mid-range devices such as the Huawei Honor 5X. The recent Huawei P9 family has blended together a high end camera experience with a super mid-range chipset and competitive prices. We've seen a rumor today and some leaked specifications from the GFXBench website claiming to show the specification of the Honor 5A Plus, but as with all GFXBench results, these can be manipulated. Although the specification would seem likely, we should take this report with a pinch of salt although it seems we do not have long to wait. Some of the information on the GFXBench site is different to the TENAA reported specification.

However, the GFXBench results show a mid-range device based around the Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 System-on-Chip, which is based around two tiers of ARM Cortex-A53 processor cores. The higher performance tier is clocked at up to 1.5GHz. This chipset is a little different from the previously rumored 1.8GHz octa core chip expected. It's still backed up by 2GB of RAM and the Qualcomm Adreno 405 GPU. There's 16GB of internal storage, a 13MP rear camera and an 8MP front camera, and a 5.5-inch, 720p resolution display panel. GFXBench shows that the device is capable of recording 1080p HD video from each camera and earlier reports gave the Honor 5A Plus a 3,000mAh battery. We have also seen a report from the Chinese regulator, TENAA, discussing a smaller, lesser handset from the same family: the Huawei Honor 5A. The Honor 5A is based around a 5.0-inch display with a quad core processor of unknown type, the same 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, plus a 13MP rear camera. However, the Honor 5A has a 2MP front facing camera. Both devices will run Huawei's EMUI over the top of Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

These two handsets are expected to launch tomorrow, Sunday 12 June, but could be predominantly aimed for the Chinese market. We've seen spy shots of the two devices and heard that both devices will be released in black, white or gold colors, but we don't yet know their availability, pricing or other details. We will let you know as soon as we have any additional details.
