App Review: Close5

This was a sponsored review: Close5 is an Android app for anyone looking to sell used and new items locally, safely, and securely. The app is similar to Craigslist as users can buy and sell items locally, with an easy way to list items for sale in your local area as well as search for stuff to buy. You can easily find deals on clothing, furniture, and even knick-knacks for the home like tools and appliances. The app makes it simple to find whatever it is you’re looking for without any hassles.

Before you can start buying or selling with Close5, you’ll need to head to the Play Store and download the app.

Close5 is easy to get started with. You’ll need to set up a Close5 account, which you can do with your email address or through Facebook. Once you’re signed up, the app immediately opens to a listing page of items within your local area that are a certain distance away. The app is designed to show you items that are nearest to you, but you can also lengthen the distance to widen your search area, with a max radius of 50 miles from where you are. You can also search pretty much anywhere by setting the location, so you can technically search outside of your local area and the app will show you listings within the location you've selected.

If you tap the hamburger menu you can swipe from the discover tab and hit search, which allows you to find specific items or categories, and the app will show you any results if they pop up. The hamburger menu is also where you’ll find the buying and selling pages. The buying page will show you listings you’re watching or have interacted with, and the selling page is where you’ll see anything you’ve listed, along with a floating action button for creating a new listing by first opening the camera so you can take a picture of the item you want to sell.

On the item pages, you can interact with sellers in the comments section, as well as interact with other users of the app. Listings also have a map location shown just below the comments section, and at the very bottom of the listing page there is a button to make an offer or report the item, as well as share the listing through text, Facebook, email, or “other” which opens up the remaining options of what apps you can share to. On the search page, you can also browse item categories instead of actually searching, making it easy to narrow down what you’re looking for.

When you list items, you can add up to four photos, but aren't required to add a price to the listing if you don't want to. You also don't need to add any description of the item, but adding both of these is likely to help you sell the item faster as your item can get discovered easier. Once an offer is accepted for any items being sold, Close5 lets the buyer and seller interact through a private chat so you can arrange a meeting place without having to give out emails or phone numbers. The app also shows buyer profiles where you can see all the listings that one person has, and you can follow people to make it easy to find new listings they put up.

While sites like Craigslist work perfectly fine, if you're looking for a simpler way to buy or sell new and used stuff, Close5 is a good way to go. The app is designed well and easy to navigate thanks to the material design UI, and the lack of requirement on listing an email or phone number, which makes things feel a bit safer or at the very least easier as you don't have to give out that kind of personal information. When compared to similar apps and services on the web, Close5 works well because it's fast and simple.

  • Safe and Secure, Close5 doesn't require phone number or email and it does let buyers and sellers communicate through in-app private chat after a sale is agreed upon

  • Some users may want the option to sign up with other social profiles like Twitter or Google+

When it comes down to it, if you're looking for an easy way to buy and sell locally without having to get online, Close5 is a great way to do it. It has quite a few awesome features and is simple to use. The ability to communicate with a chat section in the app as opposed to exchanging personal information is a huge plus for those who want a little privacy too.
