Home automation has become all the rage nowadays, with devices that not only adapt to daily schedules and habits but also connect to smartphones for remote control and easier access. Removing some of the more traditional ways we used to interface with parts of our home and replacing them with easier, all-in-one control solutions is just one way to bring home automation to more people, and Kwikset’s Kevo Bluetooth Enabled Deadbolt is one such product. While it still has a normal key interface as a backup, it’s designed to be activated wirelessly via either the included key fob or more preferably your smartphone.
This works via Bluetooth Low Energy, which relies on the Bluetooth 4.x platform and should be available on any modern smartphone. As such the Kevo Unikey app can be found on the Google Play Store, or for those with iOS devices as well even the Apple Appstore. Samsung Galaxy S6 and later customers have had this included on their phones already thanks to Samsung Knox integration. While the app only works with phone running Android 5.0 Lollipop and higher, the majority of Android users will be running that or higher soon. We’ve got one in house and give you an unboxing, as well as a detailed installation of the deadbolt. Once that’s over we walk you through how to set up that key fob as well as getting the deadbolt to lock and unlock from your smartphone via the Unikey app. Check out the video and stay tuned for our full review in the coming weeks!
