On Sunday, Samsung started inviting the press to their Unpacked event which is slated for February 21st in Barcelona, Spain. They also dropped a teaser video regarding the event. This video is what has everyone buzzing. We expect Samsung to announce the Galaxy S7 - and perhaps the Galaxy S7 Edge - at the event later this month. But the beginning of the video here shows Gear VR. Which makes us wonder, what kind of Virtual Reality products might we see at Mobile World Congress from Samsung, and perhaps other smartphone makers. What's interesting is in this teaser video, Samsung doesn't hint to smartphones at all. You're basically strapping on the Gear VR and reaching for a box, which will be unpacked at MWC. The box and unpacking metaphor is something that Samsung has used before, given that their names are always Unpacked.
Reading into this, it could be simply that Samsung is going to be broadcasting the show in virtual reality - which they wouldn't be the first to do so as OnePlus and HTC have already done it in 2015 with their launches. However we could also be seeing some virtual reality announcements, which is what everyone else is hoping for. The Gear VR is already perhaps the best headset you can pick up that will work with your smartphone and not cost an arm and a leg. In fact it costs just $99. However it does work with only the Galaxy S6, Galaxy S6 Edge, Galaxy S6 Edge+ and Galaxy Note 5. Which is unfortunate, especially for those that have a Samsung smartphone already. Samsung has partnered with Oculus for the Gear VR, and we've already seen some pretty unique things come out of this partnership.
We'll be in Barcelona for the Unpacked event on February 21st, so make sure you keep it locked to Android Headlines for all of the details. It would be interesting to see something else take center stage at the Unpacked in Barcelona. As Unpacked has always been a smartphone, generally the Galaxy S or Galaxy Note depending on the time of year. We should have more for you in the next few weeks.
