More Affordable ZenFone Zoom Handset Is Not In Asus' Plans

Asus' ZenFone devices became really popular last year. This Taiwan-based company has released quite a few of those phones, we've seen a number of variants hit the market. The ZenFone Zoom is not only one of the highest-end ZenFone-branded devices to date, but it's also one of the most interesting ones. This handset features a quite capable camera which brings a 3x optical zoom to the table. The ZenFone Zoom was announced back in January last year, but it was released back in December. This smartphone has been announced by the company in India yesterday, and we do have some new ZenFone Zoom-related info to share with you, read on.

The source talked to Asus' executives, and one of them said that Asus has no plans of releasing a more affordable variant of the ZenFone Zoom, even though it might happen sometime down the road. This device is priced at Rs. 37,999 ($560) in India, which doesn't make it one of the most expensive devices out there, but it's not that cheap either. You have to keep in mind that the ZenFone Zoom packs in 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, along with its other specs we'll talk about soon. "We may try to do that in the future but not now," Shen says. "We spent two years trying to make sure everything is perfect, and then [later] we can start [looking at other models]," said Jerry Shen, Asus' CEO. The ZenFone Zoom's camera is rather interesting. It is hard not to notice the 'oreo' protruding on the back, but those of you who love photography might not mind this design choice, if the phone is capable of producing great images, of course. Jerry Shen actually said that this phone's optics actually account for 40-50% fo the phone's cost, which is quite interesting.

The Asus ZenFone Zoom features a 5.5-inch 1080p (1920 x 1080) IPS display, 4GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, at least the variant that launched in India yesterday. The ZenFone Zoom is fueled by Intel's Atom Z3580 quad-core SoC, along with a PowerVR G6430 GPU for graphics. The 13-megapixel shooter (f/2.7-4.8, 28-84mm 3x optical zoom, OIS, Laser Autofocus) is placed on the back of this phone, and a 5-megapixel snapper (f/2.0) can be found up front. Android 5.0 Lollipop comes pre-installed, along with Asus' ZenUI which is available on top of Google's OS. The 3,000mAh non-removable battery is also a part of this package, and the phone measures 158.9 x 78.8 x 12mm, while it weighs 185 grams.
