Xiaomi Claims To Have Shipped 11 Million Redmi 2A Units

On Friday, Chinese smartphone vendor Xiaomi announced that its Q3 sales in India have exceeded a million units. The company however, is doing even better in its home base of China and even though it has slid below Huawei as the leading vendor of Android devices in the Chinese market this year, it is still managing to sell its phones by the truckloads according to recent reports from leading market research firms. Now, according to a post on Chinese microblogging site Weibo, the company has managed to ship as many as 11 million units of its Redmi 2A smartphones since the device was launched earlier this year. The Redmi 2A is the cheapest smartphone available in the Xiaomi portfolio and costs about 499 Yuan ($78) for the base version in the company's home market of China. This particular version comes with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage. There's however, a more premium version of the device that comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage, which reportedly comes for 549 Yuan ($86) in China.

The Redmi 2, in its various avatars, has been a best seller for Xiaomi, and earlier this year, the company had announced that it has been able to sell 13 million units of the smartphone, all variants combined. Of course, the Redmi 2 and 2A are actually different devices on the inside. While the Redmi 2 is powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 410 SoC, the 2A comes with a Leadcore L1860C chipset under the hood. The company also sells a Redmi 2 Prime in India, which is basically the exact same device as the original Redmi 2, but with double the memory and storage, as compared to the base version of the device, which comes with 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage.

Coming to the hardware specs of the Redmi 2A, the smartphone features a 5-inch 720p panel, and is powered by a Leadcore L1860C chipset, which comes with a quad-core, 1.5 GHz CPU and a Mali-T628 MP2 GPU. The device comes in 2 variants, with the base version sporting 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of internal storage, whereas the premium version comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. Imaging options on the handset include an 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera, and Android 5.0 Lollipop comes preinstalled in the form of MIUI 6.0.
