UPDATE: TAG’s Connected Watch will cost you $1,650 CAD. It appears to be sold exclusively through Raffi Jewelers in Toronto’s Yorkdale Mall on a limited supply basis.
At the unveiling of their new Android Wear ‘Connected Watch‘ watch this morning, TAG Heuer CEO Jean-Claude Biver indicated that it is not enough to have tradition to survive – you must also have innovation. In order to have a future, there must be a “marriage of watch valley and silicon valley,” and now with their new TAG Heuer Connected Watch, they have achieved that goal. It mates the history and prestige of a great Swiss watch with Google’s Android Wear OS – on the outside you have titanium and on the inside you have access to thousands of Google Apps.
The TAG Connected smartwatch measures 46.2 mm in diameter and 12.8 mm in thickness – in other words a 1.5-inch round face with a resolution of 360 x 360 and 240 pixels-per-inch (PPI) – and weighs in at 5 grams. The titanium Grade case comes with horizontal and vertical fine-brushed titanium lugs, 3D raised numerals, a Black, carbine-coated titanium bezel with anti-fingerprint coating. It also sports a titanium single push-button with a TAG Heuer shield on the end and IP67 splash-proof water resistant certification. The crystal is scratch-resistant sapphire and covers the 1.5-inch transflective LTPS LCD display.
The brains is provided by an Intel dual-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz (500 MHz is the normal operating speed), coupled with 1GB of memory and 4GB of storage. It also has a Gyroscope, tilt detection sensor, microphone, haptic engine and a number of other sensors, such as fitness tracker and directional wind and weather monitoring. Its connectivity is both Bluetooth BLE v4.1 and Wi-Fi 2.5GHz 802.11 B/G/N. There is no speaker on the device so all alerts must be read on the face.
It comes with a conductive charging cradle with a USB cable and wall plug and uses a 410mAh battery that TAG Heuer claims will give you a minimum of 25 hours, based on typical usage. The TAG Connected is compatible with both Android 4.3 and higher or even iOS 8.2 and higher. The vulcanized rubber strap comes with grade 2 titanium folding clasp and safety push-buttons and is available in seven strap colors of green, blue, orange, red, white, black and yellow. The TAG Connected watch will cost you a cool US$1,500 and according to Bloomberg, will be available in TAG’s New York boutique at noon today and tomorrow in 20 boutique locations across the US and available in Canada and online. No Canadian pricing was available, but details will likely become known in due time.
