We knew that the new entry-level all-metal Samsung Galaxy A5 and Galaxy S5 Neo would be coming to Canada, but we were not sure exactly when, where and for how much. It seems as though answers are now available - first, the Galaxy A5 should arrive on November 12 at select carriers and then followed by the arrival of the Galaxy S5 Neo, possibly a few weeks later. Samsung Canada has not specified which carriers will get the entry-level Galaxy A5, but most likely it will be available at Rogers, Bell, Telus, Virgin and SaskTel...and possibly a few others. The Galaxy A5 has been available in Asian and European markets for almost eight months, but with the weakening of the Canadian dollar, the lower priced Galaxy A5 may be an attractive alternative to the more expensive Galaxy S6 models.
Even though the Galaxy A5 is an entry-level device, with its unibody metal construction its looks very nice and a great alternative to the older plastic construction Samsung was known to employ. The Galaxy A5 uses a 5-inch HD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and 294 PPI, a Snapdragon 410 quad-core processor clocked at 1.2GHz. It uses 2GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage, expandable via a microSD card up to 64GB. The main camera is a 13MP shooter with autofocus and an LED flash and a 5MP front-facing camera (FFC) for social media selfies and video chatting. A 2,300mAh battery powers the Galaxy A5. It will arrive with Android 4.4 KitKat, measures 139.3 x 69.7 x 6.7mm and weighs in at 123 grams.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo (shown below) is a little further up on the food chain - it comes with a 5.1 FHD Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 1900 x 1080 pixels and 432 PPI. It will use a homegrown 64-bit Exynos 7580 octa-core processor clocked at 1.6 GHz with GB of RAM and 16GB of internal storage that is expandable with a microSD card up to 128GB. It sports a 16MP main camera with autofocus and LED flash with a 5MP FFC for selfies and video chats. Power is provided by a 2,800 mAh battery and the device measures 142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm and weighs in at 145 grams. It will arrive with Android 5.1 Lollipop.
Pricing looks like the Galaxy A5 will run from $399.99 no-term at Rogers and $0 on a two-year contract to $450 at Telus and $100 on a two-year plan. The Galaxy S5 Neo will be available for $549.99 on a no-term contract.
