When it comes to Android TV, 'availability' has always seemed to be the prolonged issued across the platform. In terms of the hardware, this is best understood as the slow rolling out of manufacturer products to the market. In terms of the software, it is best understood as a slow rolling out of the compatible apps and games. However, that does not mean that apps and games have not been coming through at all.
In fact, a few months ago, the Play Store saw a massive overhaul of its presentation and contents which effectively saw tons of apps and games seeing their Android TV compatibility being switched on. Overnight the Play Store increased massively in the number of apps and games it suddenly offered. However, this also led to quite the expansion in the number of categories that were listed on the Play Store. Which in some ways, seemed to be make it equally as hard and confusing to find a specific app or game due to the variance of categories listed and for just about everything.
Well, it now seems the Play Store on Android TV has been receiving another update and while the first was designed to pack all the content into the Play Store, this update seems to be more designed to ensure that content is better organized and more neatly packaged. Now when you visit the Play Store, gone are the immediate listing of all categories and instead only Home, Games, My Apps and Settings are displayed. Once Home or Games are clicked on, the additional categories which were in place on the original Play Store home page are listed. So in short, the categories have not exactly been removed, but just tucked away form the main screen view. By now, chances are that your Android TV device has already seen the Play Store update arrive, as it has been rolling out since last night. However, if you have not seen the update yet, you can always pull the update APK from the link below, push to your device and sideload as normal.
