The smartwatch category is a hot topic with just about all of the major manufacturers already touting a second, third or even fourth generation design. Samsung has been a dominate force in the smartwatch industry with their own Tizen OS in most of their watches as well as supporting the Android Wear OS. No matter what OS you may find in a Samsung smartwatch, one thing was always consistent – a squared off or rectangle design of the timepiece. The Gear S2 is their first time at the ’round faced rodeo’ and it seems like they have done an excellent job, even using a rotating bezel/crown to make selections – it is ‘squarely’ going up against the new Apple Watch.
When Samsung revealed its new Gear S2 smartwatch, they claimed that shipments would start in October. Just yesterday, they confirmed an October 2 date for availability in the US and today they announced that the Gear S2 is now available for pre-order on Canada’s Best Buy website set for an October 16 delivery date if you purchase today. The cost for the regular version (Dark Grey or Silver) will set you back CAD$399.99 and the Gear S2 Classic (Black/Blue) will cost you CAD$429.99.
Many have resisted the urge to purchase a smartwatch, but they are becoming more refined and more functional. It has a 1.2-inch circular Super AMOLED touchscreen with 16-bit 360 x 360-pixel display covered by Gorilla Glass for greater protection and anti-scratch resistance. It is also dust proof and IP68 water resistant. Besides tracking your health and fitness activities, the Gear S2 will sync with your smartphone to keep you connect via Wi-Fi (8-2.11b/g/n) and Bluetooth (4.1) and has NFC connectivity – you will be able to make mobile payments using your Gear S2. It can sync with your smartphone to make and receive calls, control your music, get notifications and alarms, receive email, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter alerts, check the weather and more. The Gear S2 works with your S Heath app to track your workout progress, track your calories, distance, steps and even sleep patterns.
