The world, including Canada, is headed towards a wireless mobile world – this is evident by the fact that recent studies have shown that more Canadians have a mobile phone than a landline phone. Mobile smartphones are a lot more than a device to simply make phone calls, text messages, browse Twitter or read you emails. Many people – and the number rises each quarter – use their mobile devices to shop locally or to make purchases online.
UGO’s Wallet and Rogers’ Suretap are two examples of ways to make mobile payments, although UGO Mobile Solutions, the company behind the UGO Wallet app, claim that they are Canada’s first “open wallet, announced that they have reached over 100,000 users one month before their 1-year anniversary. The users of the UGO app have already added over 250,000 credit, gift and loyalty cards to use when making mobile purchases. Rogers’ Suretap, establish in September, already has about 180,000 users, although Suretap offers some additional features not yet available with the UGO Wallet. However, UGO does plan to add more features over the upcoming months. The UGO Wallet that helps users organize all of their credit cards, debit cards, loyalty cards and gift cards under one secure application and allows Canadians a quick, easy and secure way to shop and participate in loyalty programs on their smartphones. Any merchant that allows ‘contactless’ payments, sometimes called ‘tap and go’ can accept mobile payments with UGO. You can also redeem your loyalty or rewards points, provided the merchant has implemented the proper technology.
UGO said that their UGO Wallet is made-in-Canada and designed specifically for Canadian consumers and merchants. It is the first digital wallet to combine multiple banks, payment networks, network carriers and rewards collections. UGO Wallet is also the first mobile wallet available on all major mobile platforms and across all five major network carriers in Canada. Alec Morley, CEO of UGO said, “This was an aggressive target, and achieving it in such a short time frame demonstrates that customers are adopting this unique and innovative mobile solution. When we first launched with our integrated payment and loyalty platform, we promised our customers that we would continually evolve our wallet to meet their needs. We’ve kept that promise, and we’re not done yet.”
