Sprint Adds Data Options To DirecTV Free Service Promotion

Pretty much exactly a week ago Sprint made an interesting announcement. In short, Sprint was looking to pull over DirecTV customers to their network and in trying to do so, were essentially offering DirecTV customers free cellular service. It was not unlimited for free, but was one which was difficult to really ignore. To recap, if you are a DirecTV customer, then by bringing over your number to Sprint, you could take advantage of a special promotion which offered free calls and text and 2GB of usable data. The promotional deal was good for the first 12 months of service, although, you have to set up and switch your line between August 28th and September 30th.

So although not bad when you consider it is free, it is still a little limiting for anyone who is data hungry, as 2GB per month will only get you so far in the data world. Apparently, this was a sentiment being said to Sprint by a number of people and it is a sentiment which has been heard loud and clear by the carrier, as they have now today announced a couple of options which those thinking of taking up the offer can make use of to increase the level of data on offer.

The new details state that DirecTV customers who migrate over to Sprint can either opt for the standard free talk, text and 2GB data per month plan and still pay $0. If they need a little more data, then they can opt to pay $10 per month and receive free talk, text and 4GB data. If you think you might go through more than the 4GB data on offer, there is also a third option where you can make use of free text, talk and 6GB data per month for only $20. So for those data levels, the prices are not bad when compared to what else is on offer, which is clearly a measure to directly compete with AT&T's recent DirecTV offers. Of course, this is only a one year deal and following the expiry date, bills will automatically be charged at the higher (normal) rate of service for Sprint. For those interested though, the new data pricing becomes active from tomorrow, Friday 4th September and the end date for the promotion remains the same September 30th date. Last caveat, it is only available to DirecTV customers switching to Sprint.
