Just last week, we read reports of Micromax preparing to launch a new affordable smartphone on September 8th as part of its online-only YU brand. As it turns out, the company will likely announce not one, but two different handsets at two different ends of the pricing spectrum, come Tuesday. The upcoming handsets will join the two YU-branded smartphones already present in the Indian market. While one is a mid-range smartphone that goes by the name Yureka and is powered by the Snapdragon 615, the other is an entry-level one powered by the Snapdragon 410 and called the Yuphoria. The USP of the YU range of devices is that they run Cyanogen OS out of the box, which, along with class leading (or at least class-equaling) hardware carried by the smartphones, have made them fairly popular, in spite of the devices not being available at brick and mortar retail outlets. While the YU handsets have thus far been available exclusively on Amazon, the upcoming devices are believed to be coming to Snapdeal, India's third largest e-commerce website.
The latest news regarding the company's upcoming handsets however, suggests a stunning turn of events, as briefly alluded to earlier. According to multiple leaks from Geekbench and Zauba, YU is seemingly just not satisfied with peddling only mid-range and entry-level handsets. A listing on Indian import / export tracking website Zauba, has revealed that several units of a YU handset going by the moniker YU5050 has been imported into India last week at a price of Rs. 20,752 ($315). Meanwhile, the aforementioned YU5050 has got leaked thanks to Geekbench, giving us a preliminary understanding of what the upcoming device from YU is going to be like. According to the listing, the YU500 will be the company's most powerful device yet, and will come with Qualcomm's MSM8994 (Snapdragon 810) SoC under the hood, rock 4 GB of RAM and run Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box. While the import price for the device is stated as Rs. 20,752 ($315) on Zauba, the final MSRP is expected to be significantly higher, once import duties and retailer margins are slapped on.
In the meantime, yet another YU device has also been listed on Geekbench, but is comparatively a less powerful one than the YU5050. This particular device comes with the model number YU4711, and has the MSM8916 (Snapdragon 410) running the show under the hood. The smartphone sports 1 GB of RAM, and like its more powerful stablemate, also runs Android 5.1.1 Lollipop according to the Geekbench listing. The YU4711 is also expected to be launched soon by YU, quite possibly on the same day as the YU5050. The company has already started releasing its first set of official teasers, and has send out invitations for an event scheduled for this Tuesday, September 8th.
