In the land of messenger apps, Line is one of the biggest, and although they have a much larger presence in Asian countries they've been continuing to grow and expand here in the U.S. while gaining more users to compete against the likes of other heavyweights like Facebook's Messenger and WhatsApp. Line has a new app out though which offers up something different than messaging, however it's still aimed at the social crowd and could easily be used in tandem with LINE's original app. The new standalone app is called LINE HERE and is basically a location sharing application that allows users to check the locations of their family and friends at any given moment.
For the app to work, users will have to opt into location sharing, which might turn some people off. LINE seems to have taken this into consideration and implemented a feature which lets users set up location sharing on a timer so it only shares your location during specific time periods, meaning you can feel free and clear and a little more private when you want location sharing disabled. This should prove to make it a little more acceptable to those who wouldn't mind using it with friends here and there but don't want it on all the time. It also displays LINE is not oblivious to the importance of giving their users more control and options, letting a user potentially set the location sharing to be turned on only for a 2 hour period and once the time runs out, location sharing automatically turns itself off.
Timers can be set for as little as one hour all the way up to a full 24 hour period, so that might be the only drawback for some users who may want to keep it on longer, forcing users to have to re-enable it every 24 hours. Following on that trend of use control, LINE HERE also lets users create specific rooms for location sharing that you can include certain contacts in to separate everything out making it easy to organize who you share your location with and when. Sharing can also be enabled and disabled at any time manually even if you set a timer so you don't have to wait for it run out. The app also shows you where people are in real-time so you have a better understanding of how long it might take them to show up if you're waiting on people you're supposed to meet. The app is free and is the latest in a handful of apps the company already has out on the Play Store.
