Many messaging apps out there also have the ability to make calls through the app, like Hangouts, WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. They all have different features, and some use your phone number (to find friends) while others use your email. But which ones are the best? Here are our top 10 VoIP apps for Android.

Viber

Viber is a somewhat popular messaging app, and they now do video calls as well as voice calls. Viber also does HD Voice, so the audio is fantastic. There is also Android Wear support, obviously you can't take calls on your watch since there is no speaker, but you can send and receive messages from your watch.

Hangouts Dialer

While Hangouts is auto-installed on just about every Android device, you still need the dialer app to be able to make calls. Hangouts is rather unique though, as it uses Google Voice, so you can get all your calls to your number over WiFi or mobile data, which is a really nice experience, actually.

Cheap International Calls by Nymgo

This app, you probably haven't heard of before, but it's a good way to get cheap international calls on your phone over the internet. It supports calling to and from India, China, Mexico and many other countries as well. You can check their website for the complete list.

WhatsApp Messenger

Much like Viber, WhatsApp is very, very popular. It's also cross-platform, and one of the only messaging services that also supports Windows Phone. Recently they announced voice calls. So now you can call your friends over an internet connection and even do group calls with your groups in WhatsApp. A very cool feature.

This is a popular messaging service in the middle east, actually, and has started to gain momentum in North America and other parts of the world. In addition to messaging, it also does voice calls over an internet connection, also known as VoIP. It's seamless and works with Android 2.3 and higher, which is a pretty big percentage of people on Android.

Facebook Messenger

Messenger is actually a really great app from Facebook. All kinds of nifty features and it's pretty lightweight. You can also use it as your default text message app on your phone and make all your phone calls from the app. Using a data connection you can call anyone, for free.

This app has been around forever, seriously. Tango started out as a messaging service and quickly became a very popular VoIP service. With Tango you can send and receive voice as well as video calls through the app. In addition to messaging just about anyone, no matter where they are.

The most popular app used for calling, Skype is available, and actually a really great alternative to a lot of these apps. You can call anyone, and make international phone calls pretty cheap. There is the option for both voice calls as well as video calls, so you can pick your poison, so to speak.

WeChat

A popular chat app over in China, largely because a lot of these others are blocked over there. But if you need to chat or call someone in China this is a great app to use. It works pretty seamlessly, and is easy to use. Not to mention the fact that it is completely free.

Messaging Plus

This app from Jibe Mobile does do both video and voice calls, so you can still call your favorite people. Additionally, you can also leave video voicemails, which is a pretty unique feature in of itself.
