When we think of mobile gaming, it’s hard not to think of Angry Birds. After all, Rovio’s creation was not only the catalyst for users to pick up their smartphones as gaming devices for the first time, but it also spawned all sorts of spin-off games and merchandise as well. Since its launch, the original Angry Birds has been updated with new levels for Valentine’s Day, Halloween and of course, Christmas. As well as these updates, Rovio also gave us Angry Birds Star Wars and Angry Birds Transformers alongside other spin-off games featuring the original birds. Now though, it looks like Angry Birds 2 is finally about to launch this summer.
A teaser on Twitter promises more details to come on July 28th, and promises a “bigger, badder, birdier” sequel. Rovio certainly have their work cut out for them when it comes to producing a true sequel to the original game, as follow-ups like Angry Birds Rio, Angry Birds Space and Angry Birds Stella have delivered new features, but ultimately stuck with the same sort of gameplay. Rovio will need to put together something truly new for their upcoming sequel, and we hope that they can definitely put together something fresh to reignite the success of former games in the series.
Angry Birds has arguably been responsible for making mobile gaming what it is today, and when it originally launched on Android some time ago, it was a big, big hit. The question of whether or not a sequel like this will be received in the way that Rovio want it to be, especially after so many spin-off games, remains to be seen and like we say, Rovio will have their work cut out for them. Recent releases like Angry Birds Fight and Angry Birds Go have been a departure from the original winning formula, and fans are perhaps ready to get back to the original formula once and for all. The question is whether or not Rovio can make this feel like a brand new game, and add something fresh to the now old school gameplay.
