Virtual Reality headsets may sound like a thing of the future, but they’re very much an actual reality here and now with both simple options like the units built off the Google Cardboard design, and more advanced technology like the Samsung Gear VR. When Samsung introduced their offering for virtual reality, at the time it was only available for use with the Galaxy Note 4. The original Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition had limited compatibility with Samsung’s most recent Note series device, and this may have slimmed down their opportunity for sales a little bit, but Samsung did announce at one point that there would be a version of the Innovator Edition coming which would be compatible with the Galaxy S6. That time is now as the Galaxy S6 version of the Gear VR is officially available from Samsung and Best Buy’s online stores.
For now the Galaxy S6 Gear VR Innovator Edition is only purchasable online, but consumers interested in picking this up inside of a physical retail store will be able to do so when it hits store shelves on May 15th. That isn’t exactly a very long wait, but if you’re OK with ordering online chances are your unit will show up on your doorstep before the physical retail versions are up for grabs. Between the original Samsung Gear VR Innovator Edition and the new Galaxy S6 model, there isn’t much of a difference other than the fact that both headsets support different phones. The original is more equipped for the larger sized Galaxy Note 4 while the new version supports the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge models.
As far as the price, it remains the same and is set at $199, and as stated above it can be picked up online from Samsung or Best Buy. With the Gear VR, you’ll be able to experience a handful of new and exciting content in pairing with your Galaxy S6 or Galaxy S6 Edge including 360 degree videos, 3D games, short films, and a selection of different interactive virtual reality applications. If you like having cutting-edge tech, this is just what you need to go with your Galaxy S6.
